How does an independent sponsor build a steady flow of acquisition opportunities?
Stourhead Holdings · Updated 6 October 2026
Short answer
An independent sponsor builds deal flow by picking a narrow thesis, mapping every owner in it, approaching them directly before a banker is involved, and keeping the conversation warm until the owner's timing arrives. Intermediaries rarely prioritise a sponsor without committed capital, so the owner-direct channel is the one that works. The constraint is time: a sponsor cannot run that channel alone while raising capital and closing deals, which is what an origination partner is for.
Why intermediaries underweight independent sponsors
A banker running a process wants certainty of close. A sponsor who has to raise the equity deal by deal is, from the banker's side of the table, a risk to be managed, however good the track record. The result is that sponsors see processes late, or see the ones funds have passed on. The sponsors who win consistently do not rely on being chosen by intermediaries. They go to the owner first.
The owner-direct channel
- A narrow thesis. A sector, a size range and a situation you understand better than a generalist fund does. The narrower the thesis, the more credible the approach, and the more complete the map.
- The full universe. Every owner who fits, built from ownership and activity data, so it includes the owners nobody has approached. Our data layer tracks 2.4BN+ market data points across 1,000+ industries and 70M+ companies.
- Signals. Succession, a capital need, a change in activity. Timing is what turns a list into a pipeline.
- The approach. In your name, with a reason to talk that is about the owner's situation.
- Nurture. Most owners are not ready on the first conversation. The ones who said "not now" are next year's pipeline if someone keeps the relationship warm.
Pipeline is the credential
Capital partners back sponsors who bring them opportunities they could not have found themselves. A mapped, owner-direct pipeline with live conversations in it is the strongest thing a sponsor can put in front of a family office or a fund, stronger than a deck about the thesis. It also changes the economics of the raise: a sponsor with proprietary flow negotiates terms; a sponsor without it accepts them.
How Stourhead works with sponsors
We run the owner-direct channel for you under your brand. The mandate is defined in writing, the universe is mapped, the outreach goes out in your name, and every reply is screened for fit, intent and timing by people with transaction experience, so your time goes to owners who are genuinely considering a sale. Where a target needs positioning or preparation before it is worth your diligence, that happens first. At the end of each cycle the universe, the outreach history and the relationships are yours.
Our team has originated $4BN+ of deal pipeline for buy-side firms, and our senior leadership brings $150BN+ of transaction experience. We cure or replace any opportunity that fails a written criterion, and our fees follow the outcome.
Questions we are asked
Can an independent sponsor afford an origination partner?
The structure is built for it: a retainer that covers the work and a success component that follows the outcome, with the mandate scoped to what the sponsor can actually pursue. Figures follow the mandate, because the scope sets the price.
What happens if an owner we approach is already working with a banker?
Then it is a process, not a proprietary opportunity, and we treat it as one: you decide whether to participate, and it does not count against the written mandate.
How many owner conversations should a mandate produce?
Enough to keep a sponsor's pipeline full without flooding it. The right number depends on the thesis and the size of the universe behind it, which is why we set it against your written mandate.
Do you help with the capital raise as well?
Yes. Stourhead's capital advisory side works with 2,000+ warm investor relationships across institutions and family offices, and the pipeline you build is usually the strongest part of the conversation.
