How can I grow revenue without a broad marketing agency?
Stourhead Holdings · Updated 6 October 2026
Short answer
If you sell six-figure engagements to a market you could list by name, broad marketing is the wrong instrument. Brand campaigns, content programmes and paid media are built for markets where the buyer has to find you. In a relationship market the buyers are known, so the work is to reach them directly, say something specific to their situation and qualify who answers. A business-development channel built inside the company replaces the agency retainer with a system you own, measured in conversations with decision makers.
When a broad agency is the right tool
Marketing agencies are built for markets where the buyer has to find you: consumer products, software with thousands of small customers, any business where brand and search decide who gets the call. In those markets reach is the problem, and paid media, content and brand work solve it. If that is your market, an agency is the correct instrument and the rest of this page does not apply.
When it is not
Most of our clients sell six-figure-plus engagements, facilities or contracts into markets they could list by name: a few hundred to a few thousand companies, several decision makers in each, and a cycle measured in months. In that market the buyer does not find you. You find the buyer, at the right moment, with something specific to say. Impressions do not move the number. Conversations with the right people do. An agency's reporting measures reach and engagement. A company in this market has to measure pipeline.
The three constraints we see most often are referral concentration, market complexity and growth risk, where internal hiring or broad-scope agencies have already failed to build lasting deal flow. Each is a sign that the company needs a direct channel, owned and run inside it, more than it needs more marketing.
What replaces the agency
- A named market. Every company that fits your sector, size and geography, with the decision makers who can say yes. Our data layer covers 70M+ companies and 200M+ decision makers.
- A reason to approach each one. A financing, a new site, a leadership change, a contract award, a founder reaching succession. The approach is timed to a live need.
- Outreach under your brand. Your name, your positioning, messaging you approve, inside compliance guardrails, through the route that suits each account.
- Qualification. Replies screened for commercial fit, decision-making authority, intent and timing before your team spends an hour.
- Nurture and measurement. Buyers who are not ready are kept warm. Response data shows which segments, messages and channels produce revenue, and the next cycle is built on it.
Agency retainer or built channel
| Broad marketing agency | Channel built inside the company | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | Activity: campaigns, content, media, reporting. | Conversations with named decision makers who meet written criteria. |
| Who speaks to the market | Your brand, broadly, to whoever is looking. | Your company, specifically, to the accounts you chose. |
| How it is measured | Reach, engagement, leads of varying quality. | Qualified conversations, pipeline and revenue, by segment. |
| What you keep when it ends | Creative assets and past campaigns. | The mapped market, the messaging, the outreach history, the response data and the process. |
| Where it fits | Markets where the buyer finds you. | Markets where you must find the buyer. |
How to measure it
Four numbers tell you whether a channel is working: the share of the target market reached, the number of replies from decision makers, the number that pass fit, intent and timing, and the revenue that follows. Cost per qualified conversation is the figure to set against any agency's cost per lead, and the gap is usually what settles the decision.
How Stourhead does it
We build the channel inside your company over a 90-day cycle and run it under your brand. Our clients have generated $60M+ of revenue through infrastructure built this way. The markets we serve include industrial, logistics and energy operators, construction, commercial insurance, specialty lenders, private equity and professional services firms. At the end of a cycle everything is handed over: the universe, the messaging, the history and the data. We cure or replace any introduction that fails a written criterion, and our fees follow the outcome.
What to ask before you sign with anyone
- Will you show me the named list of companies you intend to reach, before you reach them?
- Who reads the replies, and what is the standard for passing one to my team?
- What do I keep if we stop after the first cycle?
- Is success measured in conversations and revenue, or in reach?
- What happens when an introduction fails the criteria we agreed?
Questions we are asked
Do we still need a website and content?
Yes, as proof. When a decision maker receives a specific approach, the first thing they do is look you up. A clear site, a few pieces that show judgement and a credible team page do that job. They do not need to generate the demand, which is what the channel is for.
What about LinkedIn and events?
Both are channels, and both work better once the market is mapped. An event is worth attending when you know which of the attendees are on your list. LinkedIn is useful for the warm route to a named decision maker. Neither replaces the system; both sit inside it.
How is this different from a lead generation agency?
A lead generation agency sells appointments and is measured on volume. The channel described here is measured on qualified conversations against written criteria, runs under your brand with messaging you approve, and is handed over at the end. The difference is what you own afterwards.
What does it cost compared with an agency retainer?
Structures differ, so the honest comparison is cost per qualified conversation and the revenue that follows. We discuss figures once the mandate is defined, because the size of the market and the criteria set the scope.
